May 18, 2008
7:30 pmto9:30 pm

Will you spend your summer holidays with the Elgars in the Bavarian Alps, enjoying the warmth of Africa or South America, or the dynamism of Bernstein’s New York? Get a good taste of all these at

KIRKBY LONSDALE CHORAL SOCIETY’S

SUMMER CONCERT

in St Mary’s Church, Kirkby Lonsdale
on Sunday 18 May 2008 at 7.30 pm

with Soloist Ann Rudge: Piano
and Instrumentalists from Queen Elizabeth School

Admission £6 at the door to include wine or juice,
accompanied children free.

In ‘Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands’ the influence of the Elgars’ recent holidays is clear, giving us the lighter side of Elgar. He sets to music poems Alice had written; words and music original parodies of the Bavarian style, rather than genuine folksongs. As simple melodies the pieces are unsurpassed, containing the warmth and happiness they experienced in the places they visited and admired.

The South African National Anthem heads the thrilling selection of World Music sung in the original languages.

Leonard Bernstein’s music has the bounce, the restlessness and the sweetness to express perfectly New York’s tragic West Side Story. Consciousness of racism and immigration was very much on the rise in the U.S. of the late fifties and Bernstein, a life-long liberal, portrays the issue uncompromisingly. With his wide-ranging musical experience, he had the skills to write compositions considerably more complex those found in most musicals: touching, electrifying, classically beautiful songs.
